The Last Word

This week, I finally scattered my mother's ashes in the surf at Dania Beach. Mother took us to Dania Beach every afternoon in the 1950's. This is the beach of my childhood.

It's been ten and a half years since my mother passed and I was surprised it made me so emotional to say goodbye again. I didn't expect after all this time, that the tears would roll down my cheeks like a flood. Anyway, as I was scattering her ashes in mid-thigh high water, boo-hooing like a baby, a big wave came along and smacked me in the butt, soaking me with salt water, seaweed and ashes. I had to laugh. Mother got the last word.

I drove all the way back home, about 300 miles, in salty, damp shorts with a touch of Mother. It was a comfort and it makes me smile.

You always miss your mother.

Oooh, I'm sniffing too now. What a lovely story. I cannot imagine not having my parents, but I know they won't last forever. I'm glad they're healthy. Thanks for sharing this.

Our parents always live on in our hearts (and in our actions).

Funny you should write this on the same day I went to the cemetery with my dad. Mum's been gone just 6 months & it's still hard to get over. From what you say, I guess one never does.

Sorry about your Mum. Sadness will eventually be replaced with happy memories but I believe you will always miss her.

What a beautiful tribute to your mother... you look like her m'lady!! We always miss them... some days more than others, but they reside in our hearts all the time.

my dear friend, I know that it was difficult to send your mom into the Atlantic but it's a beautiful ocean!!!
I can picture you wet with saltwater & ashes....:-)

Thanks Jayne. I don't really look at all like Mother but am the spitting image of my daddy. However, I sound exactly like her and I act so totally like her, it is a constant reminder to all who knew her.
xox, FLA - looks just like her Daddy but acts just like her Mother!

Dear Sweet p'Tater,

My mother loved being in the Atlantic every day and so did I. It was the perfect thing to do and it took me a long while to part with her but I feel an absolute joy today that I haven't felt in the last 10.5 years. :))
